Salukis outgained by Cougars, 504-245

SIU falls to 0-2, BYU improves to 2-0

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Carbondale football fell to 0-2 on the season after a 41-13 loss to Brigham Young University on Saturday afternoon at William and Mary Jones Stadium in Provo, Utah. The Salukis were outgained by the Cougars, 504-245, including 354-22 passing yards.

BYU scored on its first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cougars added field goals in the second and third quarters to extend their lead to 30-0.

SIU got on the board with a 30-yard field goal by Nico Gualdoni with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Salukis cut the deficit to 30-10 with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Nic Baker to Abrams Brothers with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter.

BYU answered back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Miles Davis to extend its lead to 37-10 with 10:09 remaining in the fourth quarter. SIU added a field goal with 5:04 remaining in the game, but BYU added a touchdown with 1:04 remaining to account for the final score.

Baker completed 17-of-28 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown. Brothers led the Salukis with eight receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown. D.J. Davis led the SIU ground attack with 47 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Lopini Katoa led BYU with 129 rushing yards on 18 carries. Jaren Hall completed 18-of-27 passes for 254 yards. Puka Nacua led the Cougars with six receptions for 99 yards.

The Salukis will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when they host Incarnate Word at Saluki Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
